Manny Pacquiao: A True Story Of One Of The Best Boxers

In my post, I’m gonna introduce you, one of the most famous boxers, the first and only eight-division world champion and ranked by Forbes as the second highest paid athlete in the world — Manny Pacquiao —

Born in the humblest of circumstances, Manny Pacquiao rags-to-riches story is a constant source of pride and inspiration to Filipinos.

– He’s one of the top 10 highest paid boxers of all time

– He dropped out of high school, but was honored with a doctorate (Honoris Causa)

– His decision to go Pro was caused by the death of a close friend who died in the ring.

Manny Pacquiao was named “Fighter of the Decade” for the 2000s (decade) by the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA), World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Organization (WBO). He was regarded as the best pound-for-pound boxer for a long time but in April 2012, dropped to number two behind Floyd Mayweather, Jr. in analysts’ rankings. He is currently ranked #7 on the pound-for-pound list.

Pacquiao’s big break came in 2001 when, as a heavy underdog, he won the IBF Super Bantamweight title against Lehlohonolo Ledwaba. He stepped in as a late replacement and only had a couple of weeks to prepare. Analysts say that his defining moment and the fight that thrust him into the limelight was his win via TKO over Antonio Barrera in 2003, in the process becoming the first Asian to win world titles in three different weight divisions. 2004 marked the start of his rivalry with Juan Miguel Marquez.

In 2005 and sixteen bouts after his second professional loss to Medgoen Singsurat (which came sixteen bouts after his first loss to Torrecampo), he suffered his third defeat in the hands of Erik Morales. He fought Morales twice in 2006 and won both, exacting sweet revenge. He also won rematches with Barrera (2007) and Marquez (2008). At this time, his guaranteed purse stood at $3 million and had developed the reputation of being the Mexecutioner, a bane for Mexican boxers fighting in the same weight classes.

Finally earned the big bucks when he fought De La Hoya 2008, where his guaranteed purse jumped to $15 million from a previous high of $3 million in his last three fights. It is estimated that also earned between $17-30 million as his share of pay-per-view buys. Gate receipts for the fight was $17 million, the second biggest in boxing history. His subsequent fights all had guaranteed purses in excess of $10 million, the highest being his fourth match with Marquez for $23 million.

Pacquiao is a relentless attacker and punches from unorthodox angles, he has one-punch knockout power in his left hand, but uses aggression to wear opponents down and waits for the opportunity to deliver the killer blow. Offense is Pacquiao’s best defense, he has excellent footwork.
