The holidays are one of the toughest times of year when it comes to your nutrition plan.
We have holiday parties, temptations at the office and who knows what else to deal with.

That being said, you do NOT have to just accept the fact that you are going to pack on the fat during the holidays. I hear a lot of people talking this way and it blows my mind!
They say – “oh I’ll just burn off the calories I ate at the party last night in today’s workout” (nice try – not going to happen) or “there’s nothing I can do … I’ll just start fresh in 2015″ (not true).

8-Tips-to-stay-Healthy-During-The-Holidays

But you can be tougher if you follow these tips

1- Be realistic

Don’t try to lose weight during the holidays, instead try to maintain your current weight.

2- Never go with an empty stomach

Never go to a party or for shopping while you’re hungry. This will only cause you to eat more throughout the night. Try to have a small snack before attending so you aren’t ravenous when you arrive.

3- Don’t skip your workouts

Most people have a little extra time available over the holiday season when they are not at work. Take this opportunity to hit the gym and exercise. This will help to burn off the excess calories and fat consumed over this period.

4- Stock up on healthy snacks

When you go shopping, be sure to pick with you some healthy snacks like fresh or dried fruits, sports bars and raw nuts.

5- Eat until you are satisfied

Don’t eat until you’re stuffed. Savor your favorite holiday treats while eating small portions. Sit down, get comfortable, and enjoy.

6- Drink plenty of water

Many people believe that mild dehydration may feel like hunger and the best way to avoid becoming dehydrated to drink plenty of water. You can also use water to slow down your eating by taking a sip or two between bites. Wine and cocktails can be a lot of fun, but they can also cause a lot of problems for your waistline. Have a glass or two of water before you start drinking alcoholic beverages, and have one in between drinks to slow down your alcohol consumption as well.

7- Act like an accountant

If you overeat at one meal go light on the next. It takes 500 calories per day (or 3,500 calories per week) above your normal/maintenance consumption to gain one pound. It is impossible to gain weight from one piece of cheese cake!

8- Be careful with Desserts

There is no one that will tell you to give up desserts at holidays.  Desserts are a huge part of what make the season so amazing.  But consuming too much of anything is a bad thing. First of all, if you know you’re going to be parked at the dessert table, modify the rest of your menu.  Load up on the lighter foods like your grilled vegetables, and salads.

Cooking with Annette’s

I was invited with a bunch of fellow bloggers to discover the world of Annette’s through a cooking session that took place at the KitchenLab in Gemmayze.

FAD_4039

We waited until we were all gathered, we all wore the chef’s hat and apron and we were ready to start the cooking experience.

FAD_4053

With the help of the chef, we used Annette’s flour to create a dough for our zaatar mankouche. while waiting for it be baked, the chef prepared pasta with tomato sauce and an exquisite strawberry tart.

When all the dishes were ready, we all sat and enjoyed a healthy dinner together!

Annette’s high-quality, low carbohydrate flour and products are the fine result of two years working alongside an international team of doctors and food technologists, to provide the best in quality.

The refined taste and premium healthy ingredients, especially developed for those with type 2 diabetes, are what makes them unique.

Thank you Annette’s and KitchenLab for this unique and wonderful experience! It was great to know that I can still enjoy my favorite meals with less carbs to stay fit!

Meet The Author Behind “Un Mois A La Cantine”

“Un mois à la cantine” is the first book by Ms. Mima Skaff Harrouk, it is a guide for every woman wishing the best for her children. It contains recipes attracting children by their appetizing colors and taste and at the same time containing whole and healthy food for them.

Ms. Harrouk explains that the idea of regulating children eating habits was running through her head since childhood; this idea has developed rapidly after becoming a mother and grandmother, especially that moms often wonder about the quality of food served to children at home or daycare, and if their diet is complete and healthy.

Learn more about her and her book here under

1- When did your passion for cooking begin?

It started when my kids were born and began to eat junk food. As a young mother, I was haunted by the idea that I should give my kids the best food with the best nutrients. So I began to educate myself & learn about nutrients’ compositions and their impact on my kids healthy needs.

2- Can you describe your cookbook to us? What is the inspiration behind it?

My kids and my grand kids were my inspiration.

The book contains a full day balanced lunch; a salad or an entrée, a main course, and a dessert, for a period of four weeks. That way, a working mother, doesn’t have to worry about what to cook for her little ones every day.

I got help from a Pediatrician & a Dietician, in order to balance the meals.

3- Which is your favorite recipe from the book?

The Riz aux poivrons, Le Gratin de Poisson & Les Purees de Legumes et De Pommes.

4- What was your biggest challenge when writing your cookbook?

I wanted to inspire & pass on my recipes to the biggest number of young mothers.

5- Do you have any favorite food blogs?

Although Le blog de Chanty is not a blog specific for food but it is my favorite by far.

I hope this book will be useful to all the mothers wondering how to keep their children healthy.

November Birthstone: CITRINE

I am born in November and since I started admiring the world of gemstones, I started searching for my birthstone.

I found that there are two gems appropriate for November: The Topaz and The Citrine. But since my favorite color is yellow, I was attracted more to the Citrine stone, also known as the “healing quartz”.

citrine

Citrine is the traditional birthstone for November, and is an alternate Zodiac stone for Scorpio.

The name Citrine comes from an old French word, “citrin”, meaning lemon.

This golden gemstone is said to support vitality and health while encouraging and guiding hope, energy and warmth within the wearer.

This gemstone ranges in color from the palest yellow to a dark amber named Madeira because of its resemblance to the red wine.

The Romans were thought to be the first to wear the yellow quartz, crafting it into cabochon, or highly polished but unfaceted cuts of stone set into jewelry.

Citrine became more popular during the Romantic Period, when artisans often favored these warm colored gems to enhance gold jewelry.

Citrine, like all forms of quartz, was believed to have magical powers and was worn as a talisman against evil thoughts and snake venom.  It was also considered to have medicinal properties and was commonly used as a remedy for urinary and kidney ailments.

It is one of the most affordable of gemstones and plentiful in nature. Citrine is found most frequently in Brazil, Bolivia, and Spain. Citrine jewelry is given as the gemstone gift for the 13th and 17th anniversaries.

Boost Your Day With Lemon Water!

Lemon is undoubtedly one of the most widely used citrus fruits in the world.  It contains a very high level of vitamin C. Though, the inner flesh is extremely sour to be eaten, it is often used to add flavor to other ingredients and dishes due to its refreshing smell and tart flavor.

One of the great ways to use lemon in the morning is squeezing half of a lemon and adding it to a cup of warm water.

A glass of lemon juice contains less than 25 calories. It is a rich source of nutrients like calcium, potassium, vitamin C and pectin fiber. It also has medicinal values and antibacterial properties. It also contains traces of iron and vitamin A.

But how is Lemon water beneficial to your health?

Drinking a cup of warm lemon water in the morning is like doing magic to your body, here’s how:

cup_lemon_water

– Reinforces your immune system:

Lemon is an excellent and rich source of vitamin C, an essential nutrient that protects the body against immune system deficiencies. Lemon water can help keep you healthy and beat off infection.

– Helps in curing a throat infection:

If you have a sore throat you could make a warm lemon drink to sip every couple of hours. That said, if you are having a lemon water every morning you’re probably unlikely to get one in the first place.

– Mood energizer:

The energy a human receives from food comes from the atoms and molecules in your food. A reaction occurs when the positive charged ions from food enter the digestive tract and interact with the negative charged enzymes. Lemon is one of the few foods that contain more negative charged ions, providing your body with more energy when it enters the digestive tract. The scent of lemon also has mood enhancing and energizing properties. The smell of lemon juice can brighten your mood and help clear your mind. Lemon can also help reduce anxiety and depression.

– Freshens your skin:

Thanks to all the vitamin C within lemons, your skin reaps the benefits of you drinking the fruit as well. Vitamin C assists in the production of collagen, so having more in your diet can prevent wrinkles from forming. Vitamin C is vital for healthy glowing skin while its alkaline nature kills some types of bacteria known to cause acne.

Further, lemon juice can be applied topically to scars and age spots to help reduce their appearance.

Since lemon water purges toxins from your blood, it would also be helping to keep your skin clear of blemishes from the inside out. The vitamin C contained in the lemon rejuvenates the skin from within your body.

– Weight loss:

Lemons are high in pectin fiber, which helps fight hunger cravings.

For a quick weight loss proper hydration of body is required. Drinking good amount of lemon juice can improve metabolism. As metabolism improves, the body starts burning fat after workout. So sip a lemon drink and enjoy the taste. But you should add honey instead of sugar or artificial sweeteners to reap maximum benefits.

– Aids in digestion:

Lemon juice flushes out unwanted materials and toxins from the body. It encourages the liver to produce bile which is an acid that is required for digestion. Lemons are also high in minerals and vitamins and help loosen toxins in the digestive tract. The digestive qualities of lemon juice help to relieve symptoms of indigestion, such as heartburn, belching and bloating.

Not only will this killer combination relive indigestion, it will also help flush you out.

– Reduces bad breath:

The high antioxidant and antibiotic compounds in lemon water may also help reduce body odor over time.

Besides fresher breath, lemons have  been known to help relieve tooth pain and gingivitis. Be aware that citric acid can erode tooth enamel, so you should be mindful of this. No not brush your teeth just after drinking your lemon water. It is best to brush your teeth first, then drink your lemon water, or wait a significant amount of time after to brush your teeth. Additionally, you can rinse your mouth with purified water after you finish your lemon water.

lemon_magic

There really are a lot of good reasons to start your day with the freshly squeezed juice of a lemon in a glass of water. After drinking, wait 30 minutes before you eat your breakfast so the lemon water can work its way through your system. This gives the lemon water a chance to flush out your system of debris and toxins and prep if for your meals!

Try it for a couple of weeks and see how it goes, I would love to hear your experiences.

10 reasons why you should be drinking Rooibos Tea

Most of you know that I am a tea freak! Everywhere I go, I keep searching for new flavors and combinations to try. But this time I had a full box delivered to my desk, the best gift anyone can ever offer. It was a Dilmah wooden box full of 5 different tea flavors: Earl grey, Naturally Zesty Lemon, Pure Green, Pure Peppermint leaves and Organic Rooibos.

miraval 012

I hadn’t try the Rooibos flavor before, but it turned out to be a really magnificent plant, here’s why…

Rooibos, meaning “red bush”; is a broom-like member of the legume family of plants growing in South Africa’s fynbos.

The leaves are used to make an herbal tea called Rooibos or bush tea. The product has been popular in Southern Africa for generations and is now consumed in many countries.

Rooibos is becoming more popular, particularly among health-conscious consumers, due to these 10 amazing health benefits. Pay attention ladies to benefit #8 😉

rooibos

1- Caffeine Free:

The rooibos plant grows naturally without any caffeine. This is important, as it means it does not need to undergo a chemical process to remove the caffeine. It also means that anyone can drink it, including those who do not want to drink caffeine such as children & pregnant women. The other key benefit of no caffeine is that rooibos tea can be consumed in unrestricted amounts.

2- Contains powerful antioxidants

Rooibos tea contains a wide array of antioxidants, which help to protect the body in a number of ways. Two polyphenol antioxidants called aspalathin and nothofagin are found in high concentrations in rooibos tea. These antioxidants protect the body by fighting free radicals. These are unstable cells, which attack healthy cells in order to stabilize themselves. The polyphenols also have anti-inflammatory properties and can safeguard against heart disease.

3- Prevents against some cancers

Some studies have demonstrated a link between consumption of rooibos tea and a reduction of cancer-causing chemicals. This is because of the high level of dominant antioxidants, some of which have anti-mutagenic (anti-cancer) properties. This means that they defend cells & DNA against damage and inhibit them from developing into cancer.

4- High mineral content

One of the key health benefits of rooibos tea is that it contains several minerals that are vital to health. These include: magnesium (essential for the nervous system), calcium & manganese (essential for strong teeth and bones), zinc (important for metabolism) and iron (critical for helping blood & muscles distribute oxygen).

5- Improves circulation

One of the many potent antioxidants in rooibos tea is called Chysoeriol. It can improve circulation by preventing the activity of the enzyme that triggers cardiovascular disease. Drinking rooibos tea also has been known to lower blood pressure and cholesterol.

6- Relieves stomach complaints

As rooibos tea contains high levels of flavonoids, especially one called quercetin. It has the ability to relieve numerous abdominal ailments such as cramps, diahorrea and indigestion. Flavonoids are known help to reduce spasm, inflammation and allergies. It has also been widely stated that the health benefits of rooibos tea extend to alleviating colic in babies. As it is totally caffeine free, it is perfectly safe for them to drink rooibos tea.

7. Aids absorption of iron

Unlike most black teas, which prevent the body from absorbing iron effectively because of the tannins they contain, rooibos tea supports the body in absorbing iron. Rooibos tea contains less than half the tannins of black tea.

8. Can relieve skin conditions

A recent found that rooibos tea can help you to look more beautiful! Rooibos tea contains phenylpyretic acid, which can help to improve acne, psoriasis and eczema. You can apply a freshly brewed and cooled tea bag to the affected areas and it will soothe and heal any inflammation.

9. Can protect against Parkinsons/Alzheimers disease

Drinking rooibos tea regularly can protect against a process known as lipid peridoxation. This occurs when free radicals damage brain cells and nerve tissue. If this is prolonged, it can lead eventually to progressive and deteriorating brain disease, such as Alzheimer’s.

10. Encourages restful sleep

Rooibos is unique in that it can be consumed as often as you wish and at any time of day. Many people choose to drink it before bedtime as it can help with insomnia. Due to its high mineral content and lack of caffeine, it’s known to help people to feel calm and relaxed.

Did you have the chance to taste it?

Will you add the Rooibos tea to your morning ritual?
